Why Uruguay?

// July 5th, 2010 // Uncategorized

Jump on board the bandwagon!

There are four teams left, and odds are, your team is out of it.  The USA and England are long gone.  Ireland never made it.   If you like frontrunners, Brazil and Argentina have left you high and dry.  And now you feel empty.  Well, I’ve got a solution for you.  Root for Uruguay.  Here are the top ten reasons why:

**Update**  Here’s reason #11.  FIFA doesn’t want Uruguay in the final.  They wanted Ghana in the semis (here is proof: http://www.teledoce.com/noticia/10124_La-batalla-celeste-frente-a-Ghana/) and they want Holland in the final.  Eff FIFA.  Root for Uruguay.

10. Do you really want to root for a gigantic European power when you can root for a tiny country of three million?

9. Holland are a bunch of jerks.

8. Diego Forlan and his girlfriend are models of fitness and healthy living.

7 . Germany bombed your granny.

6. Uruguay started the French downfall.

5. Uruguay is playing without its captain, best scorer, and best fullback.  We need the help!

4. Spain is too good.  And David Villa’s soul patch is annoying.

3. We’ve got really nice jerseys.

2. Abreu’s penalty.

1. Fate is on our side!

So, please, come on and get on board the Uruguay bandwagon.  We offer fine food, wonderful people, and no pressure, because we are playing with house money.  If we beat the obnoxious Dutch, who also lose big matches, then we get Suarez and Fucile back and get to take on an even bigger power in Germany or Spain.  And anything can happen in one game.  It’s a high risk, high return strategy, but isn’t that what living is all about?  For once in your life, live a little!

A reason against supporting them however is Luis Suarez. Nothing to do with that handball but he has dived his way around the pitch all through this tournament.

  2. dougbol says:

Robben will roll around, hog the ball. Van Persie will overshoot. The selfish look-at-me of the Dutch will be their downfall. As much as I am an individualist, team play will win the game. And if Uruguay brings that team spirit, they will win. As Maradona has sorely discovered, a few stars cannot succeed for everyone.

    Van Wherishe, Higuaquien?

  4. bolso says:

Uruguay’s front men need to pass the ball instead of going for glory. They had the chance to wrap up the games against S Korea and Ghana but the strikers kept taking wild shots instead of passing to their mates for (relatively) simple tap-ins. Suarez was one of the worst offenders! They nearly came unstuck twice, this time they’ll be badly punished if they don’t make that pass.

I must have missed the part where Germany bombed Newfoundland…anyway after not checking out this site for quite some time (2nd child born, no sleep etc, etc) I felt I had to come back, especially after all the venom directed towards Suarez post Ghana. Now I’m of the opinion that what Suarez did was fine, especially since the ‘free kick’ that led to all of that was a joke, and the rules state “red card, PK, out a game’ which happened…however his reactions and comments post game have led my Uruguayan wife to take down her Uruguayan flag off the new mini van (yeah, I know but 2 kids and grandparents) stating her love for Forlan, Perez and Lugano has never wavered, but Suarez to be a “jerk” and then she lapses into rapid fire spanish of the kind not to be typed in mixed company.
As for the game vs Holland, I think all the team spirit in the world isn’t going to make up for missing a huge portion of your team, as well as the fact even at full strength I think the Dutch would still take it.
Lazar, if at the start of the tourney someone would have said “Uruguay vs either Spain or Germany” in the 3rd place game…you’d have been all over it, so patomine villian notwithstanding Uruguay have done better than I think anyone except my father-in law really expected and have been a fun team to follow, with Fucile and Perez the unsung players for me so far with Loderio being the let down.
Oh yeah, regarding point #3…I’m not sold on the jerseys, that ‘star neck’ detail is distracting, I prefer my street ferria (sp?) knock off from the Copa’s a few years ago.

  6. Lazar says:

Yes, yes, and yes. And nice to see Andrew back on board.

Dougbol, every time Robben rolls around I promise to tweet that “as dougbol predicted…”

    Vamos Uruguay!

  7. john@York UK says:

    Lazar :
Can I still have my complementary $10 Wall-Mart voucher if, heaven forbid, Holland don’t capitulate ?

  8. dougbol says:

Lazar, cheers to that. You will be busy tweeting that many times during the game, ha.

  9. Diana says:

You are absolutly right!!, I am a Uruguayan, living in England, I am not care much about football despite that I have had good professionals players in my family but this time is completely different!!, Vamos Uruguay!!, arriba La Celeste!!

  10. Dave says:

After all of the false vitriol regarding Suarez’s handball, I feel that I’m left with no choice but to through my full support behind La Celeste. It is truly inspiring to see a nation of 3 million people reaching this stage of the world’s most important sporting event — it is proof positive that anything is possible.

    Vamous Uruguay!

  11. Rodney says:

I do not think that the final result was unfair to Ghana. Suarez got punished for his cheating and Ghana did not take advantage of it. HOWEVER, a cheater is still a cheater even when he’s caught. It is very sad to think that the first instinct of a world class player is to cheat when the game is on the line. And it says a lot about the game today as well. Players from every nation dive, argue with the refs, try to game the system and cheat (and get away with it more often than not). Uruguay is not the only team guilty of this, but Suarez’s cheating is perhaps the most blatant and unapologetic of them all. The fact that he is now a hero to his team and country make it worse and ensure that in the future players will break the rules even more. If you have to cheat to win, the win has no honor, even if the cheating is punished.

  12. Boerebroek says:

    Dream on, clown.

  13. Lazar says:

Boerebroek, you smell Dutch, and I smell your fear. But you are correct — I am a clown.

dougbol, the article basically says that Uruguay showed its toughness and hints that from the clip, that FIFA may have wanted the African team in the semis. There were a LOT of uncalled fouls on the Ghanains in that game.

  14. dougbol says:

What does the Teledoce article say? Unfortunately I do not read Spanish well enough to get the meaning. I’m not surprised, though, that FIFA is corrupt and has an agenda.

  15. Eddy says:

You gave a good fight, but come on.. You didn’t really think you could pull this off, right?
